When was the Zenless Zone Zero release date? HoYoverse fans were initially left waiting with bated breath for news on the Zenless Zone Zero release date after the studio announced its incredibly stylish urban fantasy ARPG – be it on PS5 or elsewhere.
HoYo has found itself a winning formula in recent years through the releases of Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail – two of the best RPG games out there right now. However, unlike the mystical world of Teyvat of Genshin, and the sci-fi-soaked universe of Star Rail, the Zenless Zone Zero characters are grounded in the post-apocalyptic metropolis known as New Eridu. What remains consistent, though, is that there’ll be plenty of ZZZ banners to wish on, and ZZZ codes to redeem in return for Polychromes that can be used on said banners.
Zenless Zone Zero release date
The Zenless Zone Zero release date was 7pm PT / 10pm ET on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, and Thursday, July 4, at 3am BST. ZZZ launched on mobile, PC, and PS5 simultaneously. HoYo confirmed the big date on social media in late May 2024.
Back in May 2022 when HoYo revealed the game with the ‘Welcome to New Eridu’ announcement trailer description, the studio simultaneously announced that signups had been opened for a closed beta or ‘Tuning Test’ on PC and iOS. Considering the fact that the game was already ready for testing at the time for announcement, it’s clear that ZZZ had already spent quite some time in development.
That being said, it’d still be another couple of years (and a few more beta tests) before the studio was finally ready to release the game to the world. Pre-registrations for the game opened up in April 2024, and it didn’t take long for records to be broken.
By the end of May, the pre-reg count had exceeded 35 million. It was at this time that HoYo finally revealed that the ZZZ PS5 release date would fall on the same day as other platforms. By mid-June, pre-registrations had cleared the 40 million mark – a huge testament to the growing popularity of these sorts of games.
Zenless Zone Zero gameplay
Zenless Zone Zero utilizes a room-based roguelike approach to the action RPG genre, which sees players enter interdimensional realms known as ‘Hollows’ in order to fight off the invasive entities – Ethereals – that have wiped out the majority of humanity. Whereas the main characters in Genshin are known as the Travellers, and Honkai Star Rail has its Trailblazers, ZZZ’s main characters are known as the Proxies.
As with other HoYo games, Proxies will have to recruit characters to their cause through the gacha mechanics traditionally deployed by the studio. Each character belongs to a specific faction: Belobog Heavy Industries, Criminal Investigation Special Response Team, Cunning Hares, OBOLS Squad, Section 6, or Victoria Housekeeping.
While fighting through Hollows, characters can execute one of three different forms of assist when switching in: Defensive Assist, Evasive Assist, or Offensive Assist. Unlike Genshin Impact, tag-in attacks can be performed through quick time events as characters are cycled through.
The longest official Zenless Zone Zero gameplay drop arrived at September 2022’s Tokyo Game Show. Here you can see the game being played using an Xbox controller as an input, presumably on the PC version of the game. Regardless, it’s clear that console functionality was already baked into it back then.
Zenless Zone Zero console versions
A PS5 version of ZZZ was released simultaneously alongside its PC and mobile counterparts. While an Xbox port has yet to be set in stone, producer Zhenyu Li has expressed his hopes for the game to appear on all major consoles in a June 2024 IGN interview.
In the lead-up to the latest on both platforms, there have been plenty of signs and pieces of evidence indicating ZZZ’s console future. The TGS 2022 footage was captured while an Xbox input was being used, leading many to believe it was going multi-console. Meanwhile, eagle-eyed fans spotted what looked like a PlayStation logo on one of the skateboards featured in the Gamescom 2023 teaser. You can see it for yourself at 0:34 below.
