DICE’s Battlefield 2042 is far from the ‘COD killer’ everyone thought it could be prior to launch – in fact, it’s regarded as one of the worst games in the series. The game launched as a premium game on Xbox and PlayStation storefronts, but given its poor start to life and the fact it’s at the end of its life cycle, many hope to see it alongside the likes of Fortnite and Call of Duty Warzone as one of the best free shooting games.
Is Battlefield 2042 free to play?
No, Battlefield 2042 is not currently free to play. The game has had brief periods of free access before, including a free weekend in March 2024. However, it has not fully pivoted to a free-to-play model, and we’re doubtful it ever will.
If you’re an Xbox Game Pass subscriber, you can technically play the game for ‘free’ as it’s included in the vast Game Pass library. Of course, any title on Game Pass technically isn’t free as you have to pay for your monthly subscription, but it’s the closest thing to free you’ll get.
Battlefield 2042 free to play rumors
Rumors that Battlefield 2042 could be going free-to-play have been around as long as the game itself, however, they have all largely been unfounded. Journalist Tom Henderson, who has a track record as an EA insider, claimed that EA could be looking to make “a portion of [Battlefield] Portal” free to play – not the whole game.
This rumor never transpired, however, and the game remains a paid product.
