Super Meat boy 3D was released yesterday and added to Game Pass as a surprise addition. Even though game pass was already getting eight more games in april they saw it fit to give us a bonus one.
It is a sequel to the platformers Super Meat Boy (2010) and Super Meat Boy Forever (2017) made by Team Meat yet it has differentiated itself by taking the game from 2D to 3D. While this has added a whole extra axis for the creative mutilation machines this series is so well known for its not all sunshine and rainbows.
The main goal of this game is to navigate through platforming levels at breakneck speed avoiding saw blades, lasers, missiles and most horrifyingly, salt. This is all done in pursuit of the evil Dr. Fetus, a small fetus in a glass jar set into a mech suit who hates Meat Boy. To get at Meat Boy he steals Bandage Girl and their daughter nugget to lead him into traps in hopes of stopping him once and for all.
Because of how new this game is it does not yet have a Xbox Metacritic score but the PC score is 75. Most critics seem quite happy with the game, saying it kept its identity intact despite the shift of game and art style. It still has its insane level of difficulty and requires impeccable control and timing to make it through a level though it is considered slightly easier due to the return of being able to stop moving.
Having said that there are a couple issues caused by the switch to 3D,everyone, those being that they didn’t consider how difficult it would be to gauge distance because you never had to do that in the 2d games as you had vision across the whole screen. The other thing many people, both critics and regular players have said is that they have not innovated or added any new ideas besides the switch to 3D leading to it feeling largely the same in aesthetics and challenges to the older games.
I would definitely consider it worth your time if you’re into fast-paced platformers such as Celeste or Psychonauts 2, however due to its excessive difficulty it is certainly an acquired taste and requires immense patience to complete.
