Call of Duty Black Ops 7’s extraction shooter game mode called Endgame was released on November 21st 2025 and could originally only be unlocked by completing the main campaign. This was then changed to simply owning BO7 because many people only played multiplayer.
In an attempt to boost the popularity of the mode it is being brought to Warzone as of April 2nd and will be free to play. In Endgame you load into a 32 player match in squads of four on an expanded version of the campaign map Avalon. Your goal is to work together with the other players to collect loot and complete missions before exfilling. There are four different map sections with each getting progressively more difficult. The main enemies you will be contending with are zombies created by the toxic mist as well as Guild members whose high value targets act as bosses who drop valuable loot and tonnes of XP.
To accomplish this there are four operator slots (classes) with unique passive and active skills that shape how you play the game. You go into the game with a loadout consisting of primary and secondary weapons, a piece of field equipment and a field acquisition which is a special weapon you can find only in match.
All gear in your loadout will come from past runs as if you fail to extract you still gain XP but lose all loot. As you travel across Avalon you will find workbenches which allow you to upgrade your weapons as well as finding minor or major abilities such as a grappling hook or war machine to help you in your mission.
The main way you progress is by raising your combat rating through objectives, gathering intel and loot and defeating enemies. Each time you increase your combat rating you pick between multiple skills allowing you to further specialize your build around what weapons and abilities you have. As you increase your combat level you unlock access to more and more dangerous parts of the map.
Once satisfied with your haul of loot you need to call in a VTOL to escape and don’t worry about being extra camped because even though there are plenty of other teams around PVP is completely disabled. Don’t think that means extracts are easy though, the area will be swarmed by waves of enemies while you wait for exfil. If you do so successfully you keep all operator skills, loot and combat rating while if you fail you lose it all.
Due to the mode only being a part of BO7 originally it doesn’t have a separate Metacritic score,so let’s move on to the public’s opinion. The game mode is considered quite fun to play, especially with friends. It is also well regarded with how it implemented roguelike and extraction shooter elements to COD gunplay. The biggest complaint is that after reaching the max combat rating of 63 which only takes around six to eight hours depending on how often you die, there isn’t anything more to do and it gets boring and repetitive quite quickly so keep that in mind. One practical benefit of it is that you can use it to grind for certain camos without having to play PVP game modes.
The Extraction shooter genre was originally popularised by Escape from Tarkov and then raised to the mass market level with the release of Arc Raiders so perhaps COD wants to get on this hype train and see if they can’t squeeze something out of it. I’ll also let you in on a little secret, the best extraction shooter ever is a hidden gem by the name of Hunt Showdown: 1896.
I would recommend it if you are both a fan of COD zombies and multiplayer as this is a good synthesis of them. Or alternatively just want some lower stakes games of Call Of Duty without having to worry about other players while hanging out with friends, but just keep in mind that a weekend may be all it’s good for.
